Lahore has launched an innovative solution to tackle Recycle Plastic Bottles pollution through reverse vending machines that reward citizens. Under this groundbreaking program, residents can now deposit used plastic bottles in specialized machines and receive green credits worth up to Rs. 1,000 for every 20 bottles (1.5L size) recycled.
PAKISTAN TO IMPORT 500,000 TONS OF SUGAR TO STABILIZE PRICES
How It Works:
The user-friendly machines – developed locally with Chinese technology – allow people to:
1) Deposit bottles in designated slots
2) Press button “A” and enter phone number
3) Receive instant credit via screen display and mobile app
Environmental Impact:
With Lahore generating 500 tons of plastic bottle waste daily, this initiative by ISP Environmental Solutions (supported by World Bank and Punjab EPA) aims to:
- Divert plastic from rivers and landfills
- Repurpose waste into construction materials like eco-bricks and pavement tiles
- Create awareness about plastic’s value as reusable resource
Economic Benefits:
The program integrates Lahore’s 18,000+ scrap dealers who will:
- Earn regular profits plus green credits
- Provide door-to-door collection via app linkage
- Participate in the circular economy
Future Expansion:
Currently being installed in 4 private universities, these Rs. 800,000 machines (capacity: 25kg) will soon expand to public spaces. An eco-brick plant in Sundar Industrial Estate will begin production in July, transforming collected plastic into sustainable building materials.
This dual-purpose initiative not only incentivizes recycling but fundamentally changes how Pakistan perceives plastic waste – from environmental hazard to economic opportunity.
