Severe storms have battered northern China, dumping nearly a year’s worth of rainfall on Baoding, a city near Beijing. The extreme downpour has forced the evacuation of more than 19,000 residents as floodwaters submerged streets and rendered major roads impassable. In Yi, located in Baoding’s western region, an unprecedented 447.4 mm (17.6 inches) of rain fell within just 24 hours, surpassing historical weather records.

Baoding’s average annual rainfall is slightly above 500 mm, which highlights the extraordinary severity of this single-day deluge. The China Meteorological Administration has reported widespread flooding, leading to large-scale displacement and significant disruptions to daily life. Emergency teams are actively working to manage the crisis, with rescue operations underway and flood defenses being reinforced in vulnerable areas.

Local authorities have warned of further risks, including potential landslides and waterlogging, as weather conditions remain unpredictable. Residents are being urged to stay alert and follow evacuation orders to ensure their safety. This incident underscores the growing challenges of extreme weather events in China, which have been occurring with increasing frequency and intensity in recent years.
