Murree, one of Pakistan’s most loved hill stations, saw an overwhelming rush of visitors on Independence Day. More than 53,000 tourist vehicles entered the town, even though the hill station has space for only 5,000 vehicles.

According to the City Traffic Police, the rush of visitors started early in the morning and continued throughout the day. To manage the situation, over 200 traffic police officers were deployed at different points in Murree. They guided tourists, checked driving licences, and made sure that traffic rules were followed.

Officials said that although 53,000 vehicles came into Murree, many also left at the same time. On average, between 6,000 and 9,000 vehicles were inside the town at any given moment. This helped to control complete gridlock, but the pressure remained heavy on narrow roads.

Certain rules were applied to keep order. Motorcyclists without helmets were stopped at entry points, while men without families were not allowed to enter Mall Road, which is usually crowded with women and children.

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Waseem Akhtar and Traffic Officer Murree Sohail Shahzad personally supervised the arrangements. They also instructed wardens to distribute awareness pamphlets about safe driving and proper parking.

Tourists were advised not to create double lanes, avoid illegal parking, and follow one-way rules. In some busy areas like GPO Chowk, heavy pedestrian movement created delays, but overall, traffic remained under control.

With the ongoing monsoon rains, a special travel advisory was also shared. Drivers were urged to check their vehicle’s wipers, brakes, and lights before coming to Murree. They were also warned not to overspeed on sharp turns or stop in the middle of the road for photography.

Despite Murree’s limited capacity, traffic police said they are working hard to make travel safe and smooth for families visiting during the holiday season.
