Punjab’s recent shift to DC rates for property tax has significantly impacted property owners in the province. Over 200,000 property owners have been exempted from the tax net, as properties worth less than Rs 50 lakh are now tax-free . This exemption is expected to provide relief to many homeowners and small property owners.

On the other hand, the Excise Department has brought over 600,000 property owners under the tax net through the new system. This move is expected to generate an additional Rs 2 billion in revenue. The new tax rates will be applicable to all properties from July 1, impacting both residential and commercial properties.

It’s worth noting that the Punjab government has been working to streamline the taxation system and provide relief to taxpayers. The Excise and Taxation Department aims to mobilize fiscal resources through equitable and taxpayer-friendly taxation, plug in leakages, expand the tax base, and rationalize tax rates and exemptions .

The property tax exemption for properties worth less than Rs 50 lakh is a significant step towards providing relief to small property owners. However, it remains to be seen how the new tax rates will impact the overall property market in Punjab.
