The federal government has officially enforced the Transit of Goods Order 2026, marking a significant step toward strengthening Pakistan role in regional trade and connectivity. Under this new framework, cargo from third countries will now be allowed to pass through Pakistan for onward transit to Iran and other destinations, provided all regulatory requirements are fulfilled.

According to the Ministry of Commerce, the policy introduces clearly defined transit routes and modernised procedures to streamline cross-border trade. Key corridors have been designated for this purpose, including Gwadar, Karachi, and Taftan, which will be used exclusively for transit cargo operations. These routes are expected to improve efficiency, reduce delays, and facilitate smoother movement of goods across borders.

One of the most notable developments under this policy is the approval of Gwadar Port for commercial transit operations. This move is being seen as a strategic milestone, as it enhances Pakistan’s maritime and logistics capabilities while positioning Gwadar as a vital hub for regional and international trade. By integrating Gwadar into transit operations, the government aims to unlock new economic opportunities and attract greater trade volumes.

To ensure transparency and compliance, all transit cargo will be subject to financial guarantees and strict customs monitoring under Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) regulations. These safeguards are designed to prevent misuse of the system while maintaining international trade standards.

Officials believe that the Transit of Goods Order 2026 will not only improve trade efficiency but also contribute to increased revenue generation and economic growth. More importantly, it reinforces Pakistan’s strategic position as a key transit corridor connecting South Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East, opening new avenues for regional cooperation and commerce.
