China’s humanoid robot “Lightning” has sparked a fresh debate after reportedly completing 100 meters in 9.32 seconds during a pre-test for the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing.
For comparison, Usain Bolt’s legendary 9.58-second 100-meter world record has stood since 2009. Lightning reportedly reached a top speed of 14.5 meters per second, putting its performance well beyond the human world-record pace.
But there’s a fascinating twist: engineers reportedly lengthened the robot’s legs by 10 centimeters before the test. That hardware upgrade helped the machine achieve a faster stride and improve its running performance.
And that raises a bigger question: Is it really fair to compare a machine that can be physically upgraded before a race with a human athlete who has to compete with the body they trained with?
The Silent Side Effects of a TECHNOLOGY World
For humans, longer legs, different joints or a stronger body cannot simply be installed overnight. A robot, however, can potentially receive new hardware, software updates and mechanical improvements as engineers continue developing it.
So, did Lightning actually “beat” Bolt, or did engineers simply build a machine capable of running faster?
Either way, the result highlights how quickly robotics is advancing—and how differently we may need to think about records in the age of humanoid machines.
