Punjab has recorded a new milestone in its ongoing crackdown on traffic violations, issuing more than 4.93 million traffic challans during the current year and collecting over Rs. 9.75 billion in fines, according to official figures.
The provincial government has now set an even more ambitious target for the upcoming fiscal year, aiming to generate approximately Rs. 23 billion through traffic enforcement. The revenue plan includes Rs. 17.10 billion from regular traffic challans and an additional Rs. 5.83 billion from the province’s e-challan system.
The announcement has sparked a public debate across Punjab. Many citizens argue that the growing number of fines and ambitious revenue targets make the campaign appear more like a revenue-generation drive than an effort to improve road safety. Critics believe that authorities should focus more on better road infrastructure, public awareness campaigns, and driver education instead of relying heavily on penalties.

However, government officials and the Punjab Traffic Police have defended the policy, saying that stricter enforcement is essential to reducing traffic violations, preventing road accidents, and protecting human lives. The province has expanded the use of digital monitoring systems and e-challans to improve transparency and ensure consistent enforcement of traffic regulations. Officials say these measures are part of broader efforts to modernize Punjab’s traffic management system and enhance public safety.
As discussions continue, the challenge for the government will be balancing effective law enforcement with public confidence, ensuring that road safety remains the primary objective behind every traffic fine issued.
