Pakistan has approved the purchase of another Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) spot cargo after receiving the lowest international bid, as the country continues efforts to secure fuel supplies and meet rising energy demand.

According to Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL), bids were opened for the supply of an LNG cargo scheduled for July 15–16. A total of three international suppliers submitted offers during the competitive bidding process.

The lowest bid of $18.23 per MMBtu (Million British Thermal Units) was accepted in accordance with procurement rules. Officials said the bid met the required technical and commercial conditions, making it the most competitive offer received.

The other two bids were priced at $18.59 per MMBtu and $18.72 per MMBtu, respectively. These offers were rejected because they were higher than the winning bid.

Pakistan LNG Limited stated that the purchase is part of the government’s ongoing strategy to ensure a stable supply of natural gas for power generation, industrial production, and domestic consumers. Spot cargo purchases are made whenever additional LNG supplies are needed beyond long-term contracts to prevent fuel shortages and maintain energy security.

The LNG cargo is expected to help support electricity generation during a period of increased energy consumption, particularly in the summer months when power demand typically rises across the country.

Energy experts note that international LNG prices continue to fluctuate due to global market conditions, geopolitical developments, seasonal demand, and supply chain factors. Securing the lowest available bid through a transparent competitive process helps reduce import costs and supports efficient energy procurement.

Pakistan relies on imported LNG to supplement its domestic natural gas production, which has been declining in recent years. Regular LNG imports play a crucial role in maintaining electricity generation and supporting industrial activity.

The approval of the latest spot cargo reflects the government’s continued efforts to ensure uninterrupted gas supplies while carefully managing import costs through competitive international bidding, helping strengthen Pakistan’s overall energy security and support economic stability.
