In a significant development for the country’s trade and fisheries industry, Russia has officially approved the import of fish and seafood from Pakistan. The announcement was made by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, who described the move as a major breakthrough for Pakistan’s export sector.

According to the minister, this is the first time Pakistani seafood products will have formal access to the Russian market. As part of the approval, 16 Pakistani companies have already been granted permission to begin exporting fish and seafood to Russia. Officials believe this step will not only strengthen bilateral trade but also open opportunities in the wider Eurasian Economic Union region.

The Marine Fisheries Department has been instructed to ensure that all exports meet strict international quality and hygiene standards. This is expected to help Pakistani seafood products compete more effectively in global markets and build a strong reputation for quality.

The minister expressed optimism that Pakistan’s seafood exports, which currently exceed $500 million annually, could rise to $800 million following entry into the Russian market. He also estimated that initial exports to Russia alone could generate around $300 million in revenue, providing a major boost to the national economy.

He further highlighted that seafood shipments will be transported through sea, air, and land routes. In particular, land connectivity with Central Asian countries such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan is expected to reduce costs and improve trade efficiency.

Officials also noted that Pakistan’s ports are playing an increasingly important role in regional trade, helping expand export opportunities. Warm-water fish from Pakistan are considered highly competitive in international markets, and with improved infrastructure and compliance with global standards, exports are expected to grow further.

Overall, this development marks a positive step forward for Pakistan’s fisheries sector, opening new markets and creating fresh opportunities for economic growth and trade expansion.
