Professor Paul Workman, a renowned British researcher, has achieved a significant breakthrough in cancer research targeting chordoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer. Workman, who has dedicated years to studying chordoma, which claimed his mother’s life, has identified a crucial protein called BRCA1-associated protein (BRCAP) that plays a pivotal role in the survival of chordoma cancer cells. This discovery has generated considerable excitement within the research community, as it presents a potential vulnerability in chordoma that can be targeted.
Workman and his team, in collaboration with international researchers, have successfully pinpointed several surface sites on BRCAP that can be exploited for the design of specific pharmaceutical agents. This breakthrough was facilitated by the use of the Diamond Light Source synchrotron, a cutting-edge X-ray generator located in Oxfordshire. The team has already isolated several promising compounds that are being tested for their potential to inhibit BRCAP and eradicate this critical protein. Such progress could empower healthcare professionals to effectively combat chordoma, a condition that has historically resisted treatment development.
