The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has decided to launch a major crackdown on tax non-filers who publicly display luxury lifestyles on social media while failing to pay taxes according to their apparent income.

According to official sources, the campaign will begin from October 1 in the next fiscal year. The focus will be on individuals who show expensive assets and high-end lifestyles online but do not file income tax returns or report their actual income.

The FBR plans to monitor social media activity between July 1 and September 30. During this period, a dedicated team will analyze posts, videos, and online behavior of individuals showing signs of unexplained wealth. The aim is to identify potential tax evaders.

Authorities said that people posting content featuring luxury cars, high-end motorcycles, yachts, expensive houses, farmhouses, designer clothing, jewelry, and costly watches will be closely observed. Weddings and large public events where cash is openly displayed will also come under scrutiny.

Sources added that individuals who regularly showcase lavish spending but are not registered taxpayers may receive official notices from the tax authority. Further legal action may follow in cases where income and lifestyle do not match declared tax records.

The FBR has reportedly compiled data with assistance from the National Database and Registration Authority (National Database and Registration Authority). This includes financial behavior, card transactions, and foreign travel records of suspected non-filers.

Officials believe that digital monitoring and data analysis will help improve tax compliance and broaden the tax base in Pakistan. The initiative is aimed at ensuring that individuals contributing to the economy are properly taxed, especially those displaying signs of significant wealth.

The crackdown is expected to formally begin after the tax filing period ends, marking a stricter approach toward online-visible wealth and tax accountability.
