An audit by the Auditor General of Pakistan (AGP) has uncovered serious financial mismanagement at Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), with the national carrier suffering revenue losses of Rs9 billion. The losses came from the widespread issuance of free tickets and heavy discounts on fares between 2008 and 2017.

Massive Discounts and Free Tickets

According to the audit report, more than 190,000 tickets were sold at discounts ranging from 25% to 95%. Shockingly, 116,273 tickets were issued at only 5% of the actual fare, causing significant damage to the airline’s revenue.

The report further highlighted that 258,990 free tickets were given away during this period, valued at Rs5.55 billion. Many of these tickets were distributed without proper approvals, raising questions about misuse of authority.

Weak Oversight and Poor Controls

The audit pointed to weak governance, lack of accountability, and poor financial controls within PIA. It stressed that the airline did not have a clear system to regulate discounted and free tickets, leading to unchecked losses.

Officials also noted that such practices reflect a culture of mismanagement within the airline, which has long struggled with mounting debt, inefficiency, and declining market share.

Concerns Over Transparency

The findings have sparked serious concerns over transparency and accountability in Pakistan’s national carrier. Experts say that unless strict reforms are introduced, such practices will continue to undermine PIA’s financial stability and credibility.
