Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a temporary suspension of “Project Freedom” in the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, signaling a possible shift toward diplomacy with Iran. In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump claimed that significant progress has been made toward a comprehensive and final agreement between the United States and Iran. He added that both sides have agreed to pause the project, partly in response to requests from Pakistan and other nations seeking to ease tensions in the region.
Trump stated that the United States has already achieved notable military success against Iran, but the decision to halt the project is intended to create space for a potential final deal. Despite this pause, he emphasized that the U.S. naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz will remain fully in place, maintaining pressure while negotiations continue. The move reflects a careful balance between military strength and diplomatic engagement.
Donald Trump Issues Strong Warning to Iran Ahead of Deadline
The announcement comes shortly after Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticized the initiative, describing “Project Freedom” as “Project Deadlock.” He warned that the plan could disrupt ongoing negotiations, reportedly facilitated by Pakistan, and lead to renewed tensions instead of progress.
“Project Freedom” was introduced as a U.S. initiative aimed at protecting commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital oil transit routes. The plan involved U.S. naval destroyers escorting commercial vessels, supported by aerial surveillance, drones, and missile defense systems. Thousands of U.S. troops and advanced military assets were expected to be deployed to ensure safe passage for ships in the region.
The temporary halt suggests a potential turning point, where diplomacy may take precedence over direct military measures, at least for now.
