The Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance (PGTA) has announced a nationwide 15 percent reduction in goods transport fares, following the government’s recent cut in petroleum prices. The decision is expected to bring relief across the logistics and supply chain sectors, which have been under pressure due to high operational and fuel costs.
Speaking to the media in Karachi, PGTA President Malik Shehzad Awan welcomed the reduction in fuel prices, stating that it has provided much-needed financial breathing space for transport operators. He explained that fuel is one of the largest cost components in the transport industry, and any decrease directly impacts freight charges and overall business sustainability.
According to the alliance, the reduction in transport fares will not only benefit operators but also help lower costs for businesses, traders, and end consumers. Industry stakeholders believe that reduced freight charges could improve supply chain efficiency and ease inflationary pressure on essential goods transported across the country.
Malik Shehzad Awan also expressed optimism that petroleum prices may decrease further in the coming weeks, which could result in additional relief for the transport sector. He added that sustained reductions in fuel costs would help stabilize the industry and support broader economic activity.
At the same time, he urged the government to reconsider recent tax measures, including the increase in withholding tax introduced in the federal budget. He also called for reductions in toll taxes, e-challan penalties, and other regulatory charges that, according to transporters, are adding to operational burdens.
The announcement comes at a time when Pakistan’s logistics industry is closely watching fuel price movements, as changes in petroleum rates have a direct impact on freight pricing and market dynamics. Experts say that if fuel prices remain stable or continue to decline, the transport sector could see improved profitability and stronger economic flow across supply chains.
Overall, the fare reduction is being seen as a positive development for both the transport industry and the wider economy.
