The long-awaited Rawalpindi Ring Road has entered its final stage of completion and is expected to be opened for traffic in July, according to project officials.

Built at an estimated cost of Rs. 47 billion, the project is considered one of the most important infrastructure developments in the Rawalpindi and Islamabad region. Authorities say final work is currently underway, including lane marking, green belts, fencing, drainage systems, road signs, and street lighting.

The new expressway stretches 38.3 kilometers and has a maximum speed limit of 120 km/h. Officials expect more than 30,000 vehicles to use the road daily once it becomes operational. A toll tax system, similar to the one used on the Lahore Ring Road, is also planned for the project.

The Rawalpindi Ring Road begins from Banth on GT Road and extends to Thalian near the motorway. Five interchanges have been constructed at Banth, Mera Morha, Khasala, Kolian Parar, and Thalian to improve connectivity across the region.

Officials believe the project will significantly reduce traffic congestion in both Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Estimates suggest that 25% to 30% of general traffic and nearly 70% of heavy freight traffic will shift away from existing roads, easing pressure on major urban routes.

In addition to improving transportation, the government is also planning an industrial zone along the Ring Road corridor, which could create new business and employment opportunities. Further development work around the Thalian Interchange is expected to begin after the main Ring Road project is completed.

Once opened, the Rawalpindi Ring Road is expected to become a major transportation link for commuters, businesses, and freight movement, while also supporting future economic development in the twin cities region.
