In a major step toward improving travel in Pakistan, the Punjab government and Pakistan Railways have signed an agreement to launch a high-speed train service between Lahore and Rawalpindi. This project, led by Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Hanif Abbasi, is expected to completely change how people travel between major cities in Punjab.
The most exciting part of this project is the Lahore to Rawalpindi fast train, which will cover a distance of around 280 kilometers in just 2 hours and 15 minutes (135 minutes). Right now, this journey takes much longer by road due to traffic and road conditions. This new train will provide a faster, safer, and more comfortable option for daily travelers, business people, and families.

But the project is not just about one train route. The government is planning to expand the railway network by introducing eight new local routes across Punjab. These routes will connect smaller cities and towns like Narowal, Sialkot, Kasur, Faisalabad, Sargodha, and others. Modern Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) trains will be used, covering over 1,400 kilometers and helping millions of people travel easily within the province.
Another important part of this plan is modernization. The railway system will be upgraded with new engines, improved coaches, and better safety systems. Automated railway crossings will be introduced to reduce accidents, and major stations like Lahore Railway Station will be renovated to meet international standards. There are also plans to create a beautiful green corridor with thousands of trees, making train journeys more pleasant and environmentally friendly.
This project is expected to benefit around 90 million people, making it one of the biggest improvements in Pakistan’s railway history. It shows a strong vision to bring faster travel, better facilities, and modern infrastructure to the public, helping the country move toward a more connected and efficient future.
