WhatsApp has begun allowing users to reserve unique usernames ahead of the feature’s wider rollout later in 2026, marking a major step toward improving user privacy on the messaging platform.
The new feature will allow users to connect with others without sharing their phone numbers. Instead, they will be able to use a unique username as an optional identifier. For existing contacts and members of shared groups, phone numbers may still remain visible.
With more than three billion users worldwide, Meta has started rolling out username reservations gradually, giving users an opportunity to secure their preferred usernames before the feature becomes widely available. At present, reserved usernames cannot yet be used to start conversations.\

How to Reserve Your WhatsApp Username
For iPhone users:
- Open WhatsApp
- Tap You
- Open your Profile
- Select Create Username or Reserve Username
- Enter an available username
- Tap Save, then Done
For Android users:
- Open WhatsApp
- Tap the three-dot menu
- Go to Settings
- Open your Profile
- Select Create Username or Reserve Username
- Enter an available username
- Tap Save, then Done
The feature is currently available only on WhatsApp’s mobile apps and is being rolled out in phases, so it may not appear for all users immediately. Keeping the app updated will help ensure access once the feature reaches your account.
Username Requirements
WhatsApp usernames must:
- Be unique
- Contain 3 to 35 characters
- Use lowercase letters, numbers, periods (.), and underscores (_)
- Not consist entirely of numbers
- Not contain restricted words or phrases that violate WhatsApp’s policies
The introduction of usernames is expected to significantly enhance privacy by allowing users to communicate without exposing their personal phone numbers, making WhatsApp more secure and user-friendly.
