Pakistan has announced a historic plan to launch its first bullet train, cutting the travel time between Lahore and Karachi from nearly 20 hours to just five hours. This project, backed by the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), is being called the most ambitious transport upgrade in the country’s history.

Pakistan’s Exports Surge by 16.43%, Reach $268 Million

Project Details

The Lahore–Karachi First Bullet Train is part of the $6.8 billion Main Line-1 (ML-1) upgrade, which includes laying new double tracks, rebuilding bridges, and installing modern signalling systems. Currently, trains in Pakistan run at 60–105 km/h, but this new high-speed service will operate at speeds of up to 250 km/h.

  • Route length: 1,215 km
  • Major stops: Karachi, Hyderabad, Multan, Sahiwal, Lahore
  • Average speed: 243 km/h
  • Travel time: 5 hours only

Cheaper Than Air Travel

According to officials, ticket prices will be between PKR 5,000 and 10,000 for economy and business class. This is much lower than average domestic airfares of PKR 20,000–30,000, making it affordable for students, families, and professionals.

Timeline

  • Feasibility Study: Completed in June 2025
  • Construction Start: 2026
  • Testing Phase: 2029
  • Launch: 2030 with 10–15 daily trips

Economic Benefits

Beyond faster travel, the project will:

  • Create thousands of jobs in construction and operations
  • Increase rail freight share from 4% to 20% by 2030
  • Reduce dependence on costly road transport and fuel imports
  • Boost regional trade by connecting Pakistan’s largest economic hubs

A Bold Step Forward

Officials believe the project will redefine travel in Pakistan, providing a faster, safer, and more affordable alternative to air travel. It may also play a role in future regional connectivity, linking with a proposed Kashgar–Karachi rail line under CPEC.

“This is not just about saving time. It’s about reshaping Pakistan’s economy and connecting people like never before,” said Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi.
