Pakistan has successfully thwarted more than 400 cyberattacks so far in 2026, according to Dr. Haider Abbas, Director General of the National Cyber Emergency Response Team (NCERT). Speaking in a recent interview, he said all attempted cyberattacks were detected and neutralized in time, preventing any major disruption to the country’s critical digital infrastructure.
Dr. Abbas highlighted the growing cybersecurity challenges facing Pakistan, particularly the rise in sophisticated cyber threats and alleged state-sponsored attacks targeting government institutions, critical infrastructure, and digital services. He emphasized that strengthening the country’s cyber defenses has become a national priority as cyber risks continue to evolve.
To improve Pakistan’s cybersecurity framework, Dr. Abbas proposed the establishment of a National Cyber Security Authority headed by the Prime Minister. According to him, a centralized authority with nationwide oversight would be better positioned to coordinate cybersecurity policies, respond to emerging threats, and enhance cooperation among government agencies and key stakeholders.

He noted that such an authority could play a vital role in protecting sensitive national systems, improving cyber resilience, and ensuring a faster, more unified response to security incidents. The proposed body would also help strengthen Pakistan’s preparedness against future cyber threats through strategic planning, policy implementation, and capacity building.
The announcement underscores the increasing importance of cybersecurity in safeguarding national interests as governments around the world continue to face more frequent and sophisticated digital attacks. Pakistani authorities remain focused on strengthening cyber defenses to ensure the security of public institutions, essential services, and the country’s expanding digital ecosystem.
