NEPRA APPROVES PER UNIT CUT IN ELECTRICITY TARIFF

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is currently conducting legal proceedings in 71 cases related to excessive billing by various Distribution Companies (DISCOs), the National Assembly was informed in a written response to a question by MNA Sharmila Faruqui Hashaam.

During question hour, it was revealed that NEPRA may levy fines on DISCOs following the completion of legal proceedings, as per existing regulations.. It was also noted that fines have already been levied in previous cases involving other violations.

According to the Cabinet Division, during July August 2023, over 4.1 million consumers were overbilled due to billing cycles exceeding 30/31 days. Following NEPRA’s directive, billing errors were rectified using a pro-rata mechanism…

Between April and June 2024, DISCOs again used the pro-rata method—both for shorter and longer billing cycles resulting in changes to the billing categories of over 1.19 million consumers. NEPRA re-investigated and issued further directions, leading to corrected bills and relief for the impacted consumers.
