Pakistan is witnessing a major energy shift as solar electricity use continues to grow across the country. According to the Pakistan Electricity Review 2026, the country’s distributed solar capacity has reached nearly 38 GW during FY2024-25. This figure is now almost equal to the total capacity of Pakistan’s national electricity grid. The report shows that more people are moving towards solar systems because electricity bills are rising and power shortages are still affecting many areas. From homes and shops to farms and factories, solar panels are becoming a common sight in both cities and villages.

Experts estimate that distributed solar systems generated nearly 51 TWh of electricity in FY25, which covered almost 46 percent of total grid electricity sales. This means a large share of Pakistan’s electricity demand is now being fulfilled outside the traditional power system. Even though grid electricity sales dropped from 125 TWh in FY22 to 111 TWh in FY25, experts say electricity demand itself has not declined. Instead, consumers are producing their own electricity through rooftop and off-grid solar systems. Many solar installations are also not officially recorded, which means the actual numbers could be even higher than current estimates.

Pakistan Adjusts Net Metering Policy, Reduces Solar Export Rate

Net-metering capacity in Pakistan has also increased to nearly 6.8 GW, showing how quickly consumers are adopting renewable energy solutions. Energy analysts believe Pakistan’s solar revolution is being driven directly by the public rather than large government programs. Falling solar panel prices and rising fuel costs have encouraged families and businesses to invest in long-term energy independence. The growing use of solar energy is also reducing pressure on the national grid and lowering dependence on imported fuel. Experts say this transformation could completely reshape Pakistan’s power sector in the coming years if supportive policies and infrastructure improvements continue alongside the rapid growth of solar technology.
