Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to increase Pakistan’s strategic petroleum reserves as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s energy security and ensure a stable fuel supply during emergencies.

The directive was issued during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy, where officials briefed participants on the progress of oil refinery upgrades, energy sector reforms, and the implementation of key policy initiatives. During the meeting, the committee also approved proposed amendments to the Pakistan Oil Refining Policy 2023.

Addressing the meeting, the prime minister emphasized that upgrading the country’s oil refineries is a critical national priority. He said modern and efficient refineries are an essential pillar of Pakistan’s long-term energy security strategy and will help meet the country’s growing fuel demands while improving the quality of refined petroleum products.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif instructed relevant ministries and institutions to accelerate the reform process through close coordination with all stakeholders. He also called for measures to enhance the performance of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and introduce reforms that better align the energy sector with market requirements.

The prime minister stressed that once the revised refinery policy is implemented, authorities must ensure its effective and timely execution. He warned that negligence or unnecessary delays in carrying out the approved reforms would not be tolerated.

The government’s latest decisions reflect its broader strategy to modernize Pakistan’s energy infrastructure, improve fuel security, attract investment in refinery upgrades, and build a more resilient and efficient energy sector capable of supporting the country’s long-term economic growth.
