The World Bank has removed four proposed development projects for Pakistan worth a combined $1.128 billion, dealing a setback to the country’s development financing plans. According to the Bank’s latest project documents, the initiatives have been marked as “dropped,” with some failing to move beyond the initial concept review stage.

The shelved projects include the $400 million Sindh Transformational Accelerated Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene Services Project, the $300 million Punjab Agri-Food Modernization and Competitiveness Program, the $155 million Integrated Flood Resilience and Adaptation Project, and a $273 million Punjab nutrition and child stunting reduction initiative.

The proposed Sindh project was intended to expand access to safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene services in rural communities as part of a broader long-term development program. The Punjab nutrition initiative aimed to reduce child stunting through investments in healthcare, nutrition, clean water, sanitation, early childhood development, and social protection, particularly in rural areas where child malnutrition remains a major concern.

Meanwhile, the flood resilience project was designed to strengthen infrastructure, restore essential services, and improve disaster preparedness in communities affected by the devastating 2022 floods. The agriculture modernization program sought to increase farm productivity, improve climate resilience, support smallholder farmers, and encourage greater private investment in Punjab’s agriculture sector.

Despite the projects being removed from the current pipeline, a World Bank spokesperson said discussions with the Government of Pakistan are continuing. The Bank noted that the projects remain at different stages of preparation, indicating that alternative financing options or revised proposals may still be considered in the future. The development highlights ongoing efforts by both sides to review priorities and identify the most effective path for future cooperation.
