In a notable development, the World Bank has reportedly reclassified Pakistan from the South Asia region to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) group for the fiscal year 2026.

According to reports, this change was not formally announced but was observed in the institution’s internal data system, where Pakistan and Afghanistan are now listed under the MENA category instead of South Asia. Previously, Pakistan was grouped with countries like India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives.

Experts suggest that this shift may be technical in nature, as global financial institutions often update regional classifications based on policy priorities, lending strategies, and administrative needs. However, such changes can still carry broader implications, influencing how a country is viewed in global economic analysis and development planning.

World Bank Warns: Pakistan’s High Import Tariffs Stifling Industrial Growth

The timing of this update is significant, as Pakistan has been strengthening its economic and diplomatic ties with Middle Eastern countries, particularly Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. Increased cooperation in trade, investment, and labor mobility has brought Pakistan closer to these regions.

Analysts also point out that Pakistan is positioning itself as a bridge between South Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East, leveraging its geographic location and strategic importance. This evolving role may have contributed to the updated classification.

While it remains unclear whether this change will have immediate practical effects, it reflects a broader perspective in which Pakistan is increasingly seen as connected to multiple regions rather than limited to South Asia alone.
