Google has officially launched Nano Banana 2, the upgraded version of its viral AI image generation model, as the tech giant continues to expand its presence in the competitive artificial intelligence market. Nano Banana 2 is being rolled out across several Google products, including the Gemini app, AI Mode and Lens on Google Search, and Flow Google’s AI-powered video creation tool. The new version runs on Gemini’s advanced “Flash” models, which are designed to be faster and more cost-effective, allowing users to generate and edit images more quickly than before.

Building on Viral Success
Google first introduced the Nano Banana AI image editor in August, and it quickly became a viral sensation. Within just four days in September, the tool attracted 13 million first-time users to the Gemini app. By mid-October, it had generated more than 5 billion AI-created images.
The company later released Nano Banana Pro in November, offering advanced features. Now, Nano Banana 2 represents the next major step in refining the platform.
Strengthening Position in AI Race
The launch is part of Google’s broader strategy to stay ahead in the global AI race, especially in competition with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Earlier setbacks pushed Google to accelerate innovation, and the company’s recent AI developments have significantly improved its market performance. Google’s stock has reportedly surged 47% over the past six months.
In November, Google also introduced Gemini 3, a major AI upgrade that reportedly boosted user engagement dramatically. By the end of December, the Gemini app had reached over 750 million monthly active users.
