Google AI image editing technology has raised concerns about the growing challenge of verifying visual evidence during conflicts, according to a report by CBS News.

The report states that Google’s new feature, which allows users to edit Google Earth imagery using AI, can generate highly realistic but fabricated satellite images. During testing, the Nano Banana 2 image editor reportedly created convincing images showing damaged U.S. military aircraft and burn marks at Jordan’s Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, despite those scenes not being authentic.

Google says AI-generated images include its SynthID digital watermark, which is designed to help identify AI-created content. The company also states that users can verify such images through Gemini or Google Lens.

However, CBS News reported that the verification process is not foolproof. In one test, after an AI-generated image was cropped, Google Lens failed to recognize it as manipulated and instead incorrectly identified it as an airfield in Shiraz, Iran.

The findings highlight the increasing challenges posed by advanced AI tools in distinguishing authentic satellite imagery from fabricated content. Experts warn that such technology could complicate efforts by journalists, researchers, and fact-checkers to verify battlefield claims and misinformation during international conflicts, particularly when unverified images circulate widely on social media.
