Germany’s iconic automotive industry is facing growing pressure as employment in the sector falls to its lowest level since 2005.

More than 42,000 automotive jobs disappeared in early 2026, representing a 5.8% decline compared with the previous year. Both vehicle manufacturers and parts suppliers have been affected, with employment falling by 6.1% among automakers and 7.6% among suppliers.

The wider manufacturing sector is also struggling. Germany has reportedly lost more than 144,000 manufacturing jobs, highlighting the broader challenges facing Europe’s industrial powerhouse.

Several factors are putting pressure on the German auto sector, including high production costs, stronger international competition, weaker demand and the costly transition toward electric vehicles. Traditional manufacturers and their supply chains are being forced to adapt rapidly as the global automotive market changes.

The decline raises concerns about Germany’s position as one of the world’s leading automotive manufacturing hubs. Major companies and suppliers are under increasing pressure to reduce costs while investing heavily in new technologies and EV production.

With the automotive sector playing a major role in Germany’s economy, continued job losses could have wider consequences for the country’s manufacturing base and economic growth.

Can Germany’s auto industry regain its strength, or is this the beginning of a long-term transformation in European manufacturing?
