In a shocking development, at least 450 international students, including several from Pakistan, have had their U.S. visas abruptly revoked, triggering concern across academic institutions in the United States.

The cancellations have primarily impacted Muslim and South Asian students, with many hailing from Pakistan, and enrolled at some of the nation’s most prestigious universities, such as Harvard, Stanford, UCLA, and the University of Texas at Austin.

The University of California (UC) system, in particular, has faced significant disruptions, with multiple campuses—Berkeley, San Diego, Irvine, Davis, and UCLA—reporting the cancellations. UCLA alone has seen 12 students, including recent graduates, affected, while UC Berkeley has confirmed six cases. The University of Michigan also reported that at least four students had their visas revoked, one of whom has already left the country.

Both Harvard and Stanford have confirmed that several of their students and alumni were also impacted by these visa revocations. Most of these cancellations were identified through the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) without prior notice or explanation, leaving students in a state of uncertainty.

Although the U.S. State Department and the Department of Homeland Security have not yet issued an official statement regarding the cancellations, former Secretary of State Marco Rubio claimed that over 300 student visas were revoked nationwide, alleging that they had ties to political activism, particularly involvement in pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

University leaders and advocacy groups have strongly criticized the lack of transparency and the absence of due process. Many institutions are offering legal and institutional support to affected students, reiterating their commitment to protecting the rights and academic futures of their international student body.

This unexpected move has caused widespread alarm among both students and academic communities, sparking a debate over the treatment of international students and the politicization of visa policies.
