Pakistan has introduced new energy-saving rules that will change how businesses operate across the country. In a meeting led by Shehbaz Sharif, the government decided that markets, shopping malls, and commercial centers must close earlier than usual. From April 7, most shops in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir will shut their doors by 8pm. This decision is part of a wider plan to reduce electricity usage and manage the ongoing power shortage that has been affecting both businesses and households.

The idea behind this move is simple. Electricity demand increases sharply in the evening when markets are busy, lights are on everywhere, and air conditioners are running at full power. By closing markets earlier, the government hopes to lower electricity consumption during these peak hours. In some areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, especially divisional headquarters, businesses will be allowed to stay open until 9pm, giving a little flexibility while still supporting the overall goal of saving energy.

The new rules do not only apply to big markets and malls. Grocery stores, small shops, and retail outlets will also close by 8pm. However, businesses related to food will get extra time. Restaurants, bakeries, and tandoors can operate until 10pm, as they are important for daily life and evening meals. Wedding halls and marquees must also end their events by 10pm, which may affect how people plan their celebrations. At the same time, medical stores and pharmacies are not included in these restrictions because they provide essential services that people may need at any hour.

The government is still discussing whether similar rules should be applied in Sindh, which means the policy is not fully nationwide yet. These steps show that Pakistan is trying to find a balance between keeping businesses running and reducing energy use. While it may take some time for people to adjust to these changes, the goal is to create a more stable energy system and avoid bigger problems in the future.
