A routine construction project in Belgium has turned into an extraordinary treasure discovery after workers uncovered gold coins, bars and nuggets worth an estimated $10.4 million hidden inside the walls of a property in East Flanders.
The discovery was made in Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde, around 40 minutes from Brussels, while construction workers were installing new sewage pipes.
An 18-year-old student working on the site initially believed the objects were ordinary €1 coins. However, after spotting a gold nugget among them, the workers quickly realized they had discovered something far more valuable.
Site manager Mario, who has spent 33 years in construction, said the team continued finding more coins and gold bars before realizing the extraordinary scale of the hoard.

The workers immediately contacted police, and the treasure was moved to a secure location. The property belongs to CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, a welfare organization providing community support.
Under Belgian law, the rightful owner reportedly has five years to come forward and claim the treasure. If no legitimate owner is identified within that period, the hoard could be divided between the person who discovered it and the property owner.
Authorities have urged treasure hunters not to visit the site, saying there is “nothing left to see” as the building is being demolished.
