A 13-year-old Australian boy has been hailed as a hero after swimming for nearly four hours through rough seas to save his family, who were swept far from shore off the coast of Western Australia.
The dramatic incident occurred on Friday, January 30, near Quindalup Beach, when Austin Apelbee, his mother Joanne Apelbee (47), brother Beau (12), and sister Grace (8) were using paddleboards and a kayak. Strong winds and powerful currents suddenly pulled them out to sea, damaging their kayak and leaving the family in serious danger.

As conditions rapidly worsened, Joanne made the difficult decision to send Austin to seek help. She later recalled warning him, “This could get really serious really quickly.” Austin first tried to reach shore using the kayak, but when that failed, he began swimming toward land.
Facing massive waves and exhaustion, Austin swam 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) through rough waters. At one point, he even removed his life jacket because it was slowing him down. Recalling the ordeal, he said, “The waves were massive. I just kept thinking—just keep swimming.”
Austin finally reached the beach at around 6:00 p.m., where he immediately called emergency services before collapsing from exhaustion. Meanwhile, his mother struggled to keep Beau and Grace afloat on a single paddleboard as they drifted nearly nine miles from shore. Joanne later admitted she feared the worst, saying she had assumed Austin had not survived.
At approximately 8:30 p.m., a rescue helicopter located Joanne, Beau, and Grace and brought them to safety. Although they were suffering from cold exposure, none required hospitalization.
Austin was later reunited with his family at the hospital, bringing an emotional end to a terrifying ordeal. His courage and determination have drawn widespread praise, with many calling his actions an extraordinary example of bravery and selflessness.
