Australia has made history by appointing its first-ever female head of the army as part of a major reshuffle in the country’s defense leadership. The announcement marks a significant milestone for the Australian Defence Force and its ongoing efforts to improve gender representation in senior military roles.
Susan Coyle, currently serving as the chief of joint capabilities, will become the next Chief of the Army in July. She will replace Lieutenant General Simon Stuart, making her the first woman in the 125-year history of the Australian Army to hold this position.

Her appointment comes at a time when the Australian military is actively working to increase the participation of women in its ranks and leadership structure. Officials have also acknowledged ongoing challenges, including serious allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination within the armed forces.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the appointment as a historic moment for the country. He highlighted its importance not only for the military but also for women who aspire to serve in defense roles in the future.
Defense Minister Richard Marles also welcomed the decision, calling it a deeply significant milestone. He emphasized the idea that visibility in leadership inspires future generations, noting that “you cannot be what you cannot see.”
Australian Defence Force currently consists of around 21% women, with a target of increasing this figure to 25% by 2030. Women also hold approximately 18.5% of senior leadership positions, reflecting gradual but ongoing progress in gender inclusion.
Alongside this appointment, further leadership changes were announced within the military structure. Vice Admiral Mark Hammond has been named the new head of the Australian Defence Force, while Rear Admiral Matthew Buckley will take over leadership of the navy.
This reshuffle represents one of the most significant changes in Australia’s defense leadership in recent years, combining institutional reform with a landmark step toward gender equality in the armed forces.
