Morocco has officially inaugurated the Mohammed VI Tower, a striking 55-story skyscraper built at a cost of $700 million, reflecting the country’s growing global ambitions and modernization drive. Named after King Mohammed VI, the tower stands as one of the tallest buildings in Africa and a major architectural landmark.

Located in Salé, near the capital Rabat, the tower rises to an impressive height of 820 feet. Its unique design is inspired by a rocket launch pad, symbolizing innovation and forward-looking vision. The skyscraper houses a luxury Waldorf Astoria hotel, along with offices, retail outlets, restaurants, and high-end residential apartments, making it a mixed-use development aimed at both business and tourism.

The project, developed by O Tower, took eight years to complete and involved more than 2,500 workers from over a dozen countries. According to project director Leila Hdaoui, the tower is expected to create 450 direct jobs and around 3,500 indirect employment opportunities, contributing significantly to the local economy.

The concept for this ambitious structure was proposed by 93-year-old billionaire Othman Benjelloun, owner of Bank of Africa. He reportedly drew inspiration for the design after attending a NASA moon mission simulation in 1969, blending futuristic ideas with Morocco’s development goals.

The tower also plays a strategic role in Morocco’s preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2030, as the country aims to showcase its infrastructure and global readiness. Its image has even appeared on Morocco’s 200-dirham banknote, underlining its national importance.

Supporters see the Mohammed VI Tower as a symbol of Morocco’s rising “soft power” and its ambition to strengthen its position as a key regional player in Africa and the Middle East. The project reflects not just architectural progress, but a broader vision of economic growth, international presence, and cultural influence.
