In a stunning departure from its typical desert climate, northern Saudi Arabia has been transformed into a winter landscape after a super rare winter storm swept across the region. The dramatic scene of snow dusting desert mountains and valleys has captivated residents and observers alike.
A powerful cold air mass brought rain, strong winds, and plunging temperatures to the area. In the higher elevations of the north, including the Tabuk region, conditions became cold enough for sustained snowfall. Key areas affected include Jabal Al-Lawz and the Trojena highlands—the latter being a developing mountain destination within the NEOM megaproject.

Temperatures reportedly dropped to around -4°C (25°F), allowing snow to accumulate at altitudes near 2,600 meters (8,530 feet). The phenomenon highlights that desert climates are not defined by constant heat, especially where significant elevation creates cooler microclimates.
These rare snow events, while unusual, occasionally occur during the winter months in Saudi Arabia’s northern mountainous regions, offering a breathtaking contrast to the country’s iconic sandy deserts.
